White Seal Maid

Author: Jane Yolen/Lui Collins

Source: Words by Jane Yolen; tune by Lui Collins.  Learned from Charlie Baum of Silver Spring, MD.

Notes: Ancient Legend of Scotland, Ireland, and New England says there are Seal-Folk, sometimes called Silkies who take the form of a seal in the ocean, but can shed their seal-skin and pass for humans on land - usually with tragic consequences. I fell in love with this poem by Jane Yoland when I first heard Charlie Baum sing it to the tune written by Lui Collins. It tells one of the Silkie Legends. This is the ballad of the White Seal Maiden
