Notes: James A. Bland wrote over 700 songs including "Oh Dem Golden Slippers"
and "Carry Me Back to Old Virginy". His father was one of the first
African-Americans to be college educated - graduating from Oberlin
College in 1845. James himself went to Howard University. This song
moved into the oral tradition and has been collected in different
