Notes: Charles Bensell (d.1877)(called Charley Roades) probably wrote the original as a minstrel song. It was collected in a songster in the 1850's by John A. Stone, known as "Old Put". The tune & some words come from "Yankee John" Galusha, adapted by Warners & Lomaxes. I know it from George Stephens
