Songs of the Lumbermen
|
An entertaining and informative mix of songs & ballads from and about North American lumbermen. Program is typically one hour, but may be longer or shorter to suit your needs.
Program selections include:
Pinery Boys: delightful images of life in a logging camp. Lumberman's Alphabet: great chorus song adapted by lumbermen from a ditty of deep-sea sailors. Lost Jimmy Whalen: Excessive grief calls the drowned lumberman back for the cold solace of one last embrace. |

* Log drives & cattle drives had many parallels.
Rustling was a problem for both. The men were often in danger of being crushed during the drives. Companions in hard work & danger relaxed sharing songs & stories. * In at least one lumber camp each man was required to sing, tell a story, or in some way entertain his fellows or be hit with a salt codfish. |
